Anyone who's read my postings on the Acid-Jazz list will know that I am a major fanboy for Meshell NdegeOcello, and so it's not a big surprise that I am all over her new album "Comfort Woman". But this is just great stuff - probably her most consistent effort since "Peace Beyond Passion" - one of the great albums of the 90s. As most of the reviews have pointed out, Meshell has left out the politics on this one - well, apart from the title - but despite this album being perhaps lyrically less diverse than previous efforts, the musical diversity is in full effect. This is Meshell's rockiest effort yet, and the sound overall is at the bleeding edge of R&B production. No-one else out there is making records that sound like this. I can't wait for her jazz album due out on Verve early next year.
